FAQ'S

Why does artwork on paper need protection?

Paper is sensitive to its surroundings - it can be adversely affected by moisture, temperature fluctuations,

and light exposure. Paper can also react to materials it is in contact with, such as acidic support boards and self-adhesive tapes.

What is conservation framing?

'Conservation framing' is the term used when specific material and techniques are used to provide protection to  framed artwork.

How do I know which glazing is best for my artwork?

Light damage can be cumulative and irreversible, in some cases UV filtering glass or acrylic is recommended.

We frame artwork with glass as a standard, but the option of acrylic such as Perspex is offered as it is lighter and less likely to break.

How does the temperature of a room affect an artwork?

Temperature affects the speed of chemical reactions leading to the deterioration of paper. A change in temperature increases the rate of deterioration, leading to brittleness and darkening of the paper.

Paper moves naturally in response to changes in humidity, so it is best not to restrain it.

It is best to keep works of art on paper in a cool (16-19c) environment, with low humidity.

A certain amount of undulation (waving) is usual in handmade and/or large sheets of paper.

What's the best way to frame artworks on photographic or glossy paper?

We would recommend framing these types of papers with a window mount. Our team use photographic corners underneath the window mount in over 90% of cases.

What if an artwork arrives in a tube?

If the artwork is tightly rolled in a tube or has been stored in a tube for a long period of time, in most cases the artwork may have to be left to flatten for a month or more. The flattening progress will be regularly by the team and the owner will be updated accordingly.

Do you frame canvases?

Traditionally canvases are displayed in tray frame without glass, however they can be framed with glass or Perspex depending on depth and size of canvas. We can also arrange for your canvas to be stretched with an external company.
